Lori follows the path that curves through the narrow lanes of the village rather than taking her usual evening route to the mountains. Shadow and Misty are panting as if they have already been on their evening hour-long hike. The humidity has created a fresh layer of perspiration that has seeped through the back of Loriâs T-shirt. She tries to distract her mind from the events of the previous few days and from the gravity of the situation she has found herself in, while trying to make mental notes for her new story idea she is working on. How will the plot evolve? How will the story end? But her troubles are too disturbing to concentrate. She tries to find solace in the gardens she passes, each in full summer bloom. But not even the roses of varying colours â tangerine orange, lemon yellow, and blood red â that adorn borders and trellises running up the front of several houses can distract her.
Further in, the houses are stacked on top of each other. From a distance, it looks like a model village. Since moving here, she has always marvelled at the various periods in history represented, separated by centuries and styles, some far more attractive than others. Stone cottages neighbour prefab shingle-covered terraced blocks, tended to in varying levels of pride and care. Be it the time of day she ventures out, or pure luck, she seldom sees many of the inhabitants of the village, which suits her just fine. She is far more likely to come across hikers or tourists walking in the mountains en route to the nature reserve or the falls.
She considers dropping into the café to see Ray, but she doesnât want to burden him with her problems. Besides, she wants to get home, and go to bed. If Molly and Albert werenât here, sheâd skip dinner. She canât remember ever feeling so exhausted.
She continues roaming the streets as she compartmentalises her troubles and deals with her disappointments. The weekend has taken her down another dead end in the hunt for her husband. But tomorrow is another day. Isnât that the motto that has got her through the past seven years? She needs to retake control of her life. Her energy levels may be depleted, but the past few days have renewed her resolve. Being still no closer to solving the mystery of what happened to her husband has crushed her, but she will find out what happened to him. And she will find out what happened to Frankie Evans. Before the police try to lay the blame at her door.
